Garden City High School and especially Garden City wrestling has been fortunate to have known Rocky Welton. Rocky came to Garden City in 1985 and brought to the school and program a sense of class and a championship tradition.

During his 39 years coaching wrestling his teams have won nine state titles - three at Goodland and six at Garden City. His programs have produced 30 state champions, and his lifetime dual record is 200-50-4.

Welton’s legacy to high school wrestling is, in part, the number of his former wrestlers who have coached. These wrestlers include Tom Scott of Texas, Rod Spellman of Hiawatha, Kirk Baker of Hoxie, Doug Moore of Concordia, Dale Samuelson of Oakley, Russ Decker of Wellington, Doug Duell of Burlington, Colorado, Randy Bahe at Goodland High School, Steve Evertt at Goodland High School, Dave Evert of Brewster, Stacy Graff of South Gray High School, Martin Segovia at Garden City High School, Eric DeLaRosa at Garden City High School, Jack Otero youth coach at Garden City, Rick Rivera at Andale , Steve Mesa at Olathe Northwest High School, Myron Ellegood at Hutchinson Middle School,.  Kevin Perez at Kenneth Henderson Middle School, and Garden City High School. Chris Bahl the head club coach at Stillwater, MN, Asst HS Coach, Asst Coach of PINnacle School of Wrestling, MNUSA Head Youth National Team Coach and on the Board of Directors of USA Wrestling, A.J. Bahl is the head youth coach and Asst HS coach at Monett, MO, Tate Thompson is the head coach at Pratt High School.

Rocky Welton became endeared at Garden City High School not only in the wrestling room, but also in the classroom by showing interest and concern for all his students. He challenged everyone in the school to be better, and largely he succeeded.

It is with great honor that we, the community of Garden City rename the Garden City Wrestling Invitational as the Rocky Welton Wrestling Invitational commemorating his time spent changing so many lives during his tenure as an educator and coach.
Coach Welton passed away on July 4th, 2020 at the age of 83, in Abilene, KS.

Thank you Rocky
